Aesthetic Smile Design (Hollywood Smile)

Having good oral and dental health has a major impact on self-confidence, social relationships, work success and therefore on the quality of one’s entire life. Even if oral and dental care is perfect, malocclusions, gaps and problems caused by the way the teeth are aligned may also require specialized intervention. Cavities, tooth loss, discoloration, gum problems that may occur due to age progression or other reasons are also serious aesthetic problems. Today’s aesthetic smile design treatments are performed to eliminate unwanted defects in the mouth and teeth. The aim of these applications is to achieve a flawless smile called “Hollywood Smile”.

What is aesthetic smile design?

The concept of aesthetic teeth is quite common in the field of dentistry. Doctors working in this field remove deformations and disproportions to ensure that the teeth have the desired shape, even if the teeth and gums of the patients are healthy. Personalized designs are created by taking into account the characteristics of the face type, oral structure, teeth and gum shape. Treatments and applications are tailored to the needs of each patient. After the aesthetic smile design is completed, the goal is to achieve a beautiful and natural smile.

Which procedures are applied during the aesthetic smile design process?

The procedures to be applied in aesthetic smile design are determined according to the patient’s needs, age, gender, facial type, facial and lip structure, and dental conditions. Below are the procedures that can be applied during the smile design process: Treatment of decayed teeth Solving gum problems Teeth whitening, Dental implant or prosthesis applications for missing teeth Lingual bracket (braces with invisible inner side) applications if necessary Porcelain or zirconium veneers or veneer applications (laminate veneer) on a single tooth or dental bridge, each tooth is covered separately.

Sequence of procedures: Orthodontic treatments are applied if necessary Correction problems in the gums are treated Implants and/or prostheses are applied for missing teeth Other surgical techniques are applied when necessary Teeth whitening procedures are performed when necessary Aesthetic fillings are applied when necessary Zirconium veneers are made with zirconium laminates. After applying all the techniques mentioned above, the design is completed. Depending on the need, fillers can also be applied to the lips and facial areas to complete the perfect smile.

What Does Smile Design Bring?

Smile design corrects structural defects in the oral and dental structure or problems that arise with age. Patients have teeth that are compatible with their facial and jaw structure. Tooth color becomes whiter and has a natural shade. Fractures in the teeth are removed. Gums get a pinker and healthier tone. Teeth gain a shiny appearance and allow you to have a radiant smile. This makes people more confident and more successful in social relationships.

Dental Implant

In case of tooth loss, implants are placed, which are manufactured using materials such as titanium that are easily accepted by the human body. These implants are used as artificial tooth roots and eliminate the negative effects of tooth loss.

What are the benefits of implants against tooth loss?

Tooth loss is a condition that disrupts other teeth and the jaw structure over time. The replacement of other teeth to compensate for the gap caused by a loss can result in an aesthetically unpleasant appearance. The best way to prevent this kind of loss is with an implant. This helps to prevent tooth loss and prevents conditions that can lead to jawbone resorption in the long term. Therefore, beyond the health benefits, it does not affect the natural aesthetics of the teeth and mouth.

What is Dental Implant Treatment?

Dental implant treatment is created to improve and facilitate dental aesthetics and is performed under local anesthesia. The surgical implant is completely painless, so the body is not exposed to pain. If the patient’s jawbone density is not suitable for the implant, bone grafting is performed first.

What is bone grafting in implant treatment?

The main causes of bone loss are usually dental and gum disease or trauma. The important point for the success of the surgical implant procedure is that the size and density of the upper and lower jaw bones should be as similar as possible to their original condition. Bone deficient areas are filled with various types of grafts. After the treatment, the patient can easily return to his/her daily life.

Recovery process after implant treatment

Recovery times after implant treatment can vary from patient to patient, usually ranging from 2 to 6 months. The dental implants will slowly fuse and bond with the bone through a process called “osteointegration”.

The second step begins after healing is complete.

The second stage of dental implant involves a minor intervention where the gum is slightly opened and the surgeon inserts the dental implant or abutment screw, a product made of titanium, into the jawbone. This is a quick stage and local anesthesia is used. The abutment is usually used for 7 to 10 days.

In the third and final stage, the permanent implant prosthesis is applied. During this process, careful adjustments and fittings are made to ensure proper alignment of the implant and to harmonize the aesthetic finishing touches with the other teeth. Finally, the patient is kept in touch at regular intervals to monitor the development of the teeth and mouth after the procedure.

Titanium ELI Ti-6Al-4V alloy

Titanium ELI Ti-6Al-4V alloy is the standard alloy widely used worldwide and is the preferred choice for dental implants. In a process called “osteointegration”, the body readily accepts this alloy and it becomes an integral part of the body. Scientific studies have shown that pure titanium has good biocompatibility, high corrosion resistance and excellent mechanical properties (hardness, tensile strength, yield strength and fatigue strength). The implant is an important and demanding surgical dental procedure and must be produced with high-tech devices. The content and material quality of the implant are crucial for the durability of the implanted teeth.

Zirconium implant prosthesis

Zirconium is a mineral commonly found in nature and is a special ceramic material derived from zirconium oxide. It has been used in the medical field since the 1980s, while the use of titanium dates back to the 1960s. Zirconium is extremely durable, corrosion resistant and biocompatible. Thanks to its durability and corrosion resistance, it is long-lasting and wear-resistant. In addition, thanks to the machinability of zirconium, it is possible to create custom prostheses with precise measurements. Zirconium prostheses have a transparent feature that resembles the natural structure of the tooth structure and the color tone can be adjusted in the laboratory. Zirconium can be used on a single tooth or an entire set of teeth.

Dental veneers / Veneers

Dental veneers, also known as veneers, are thin sheets of ceramic 0.5 to 0.7 mm thick and are placed and bonded to the surface of the teeth with special adhesives. Veneers can be applied to both the upper row of teeth and the lower row of teeth; they can cover all teeth or only part of the front teeth, depending on the health and color of the teeth. Dental veneers not only whiten teeth, but also help to reshape the shape, length and position of teeth.

Dental veneers can almost always be applied, but not in some special cases. For example, in cases of advanced decay or when chewing function is compromised (veneers can fall off or break), it may be better to have full dentures. In professional teeth whitening treatment, it is recommended to check the teeth about every two years, while the color of the veneers does not require maintenance with good care (regular teeth cleaning, flossing, etc.).

Implant treatment stages

Before each procedure, detailed dental examinations are performed to confirm patient suitability for dental implant treatment. In which cases are dental implants not recommended? Here are the most common cases: Serious heart disease in the last 6 months, e.g. stroke, heart attack, serious valve disease. People undergoing active tumor treatment Serious immune deficiencies. Uncontrolled high blood pressure. Diabetes (specialist opinion required). If the patient does not have a clinical condition that prevents dental implant treatment, a 3D tomography is performed.

The jaw structure is examined. A special implant is placed in the jawbone. The duration of this process depends on the number of implants and the jaw structure. The osteointegration process begins, which takes 2 to 6 months. Prosthetic treatment begins. After these stages, the implant procedure is completed. In the prosthetic treatment phase, a bridge or porcelain crown is applied over the implant (fixed dentures). Veneering techniques are used to create an aesthetic smile. The specialist examines the teeth and gums and realizes the tooth design.

TOOTH WHITENING

Teeth are of great aesthetic importance and should have a healthy appearance. Ideally, it is desirable to have healthy and white teeth. However, changes in tooth enamel can cause different types of unwanted tooth discoloration. Teeth whitening is a procedure performed by specialists and can restore teeth to their natural color.

Changes in tooth color / discoloration

The main causes of tooth discoloration can be: Excessive smoking, Coffee and tea consumption Systemic diseases (blood disorders, fluorosis, etc.), Inadequate oral hygiene, Certain medications or types of antibiotics (for example, long-term use of chlorhexidine, tetracycline, etc.), Consumption of very hot or cold foods, Aging of teeth. In general, these factors can be an indicator of changes in tooth color in humans. However, this process is not irreversible. Teeth can regain their former white shade with expertly applied or monitored treatments.

Teeth whitening methods

Before the teeth whitening procedure, the specialist treats the patient’s possible ailments and performs a professional cleaning of the patient’s mouth. After this procedure, the patient is ready for the teeth whitening treatment. Which method and whitening material to choose depends on the desired degree of whiteness and brightness. Teeth whitening methods: Teeth whitening in the clinic, Teeth whitening at home under the supervision of a dentist, Laser teeth whitening.

Teeth whitening in the clinic

Teeth whitening is performed directly in the clinic by a specialist. Before the whitening procedure, individual color tests are performed so that the patient can clearly see the result before the treatment. If necessary, a professional teeth cleaning is performed by the specialist. The gums are carefully sealed to avoid damaging them. A gel is then applied, usually containing hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide.

The concentration in this gel can vary depending on the technique used and the needs of the patient. Whitening occurs when oxygen is released as soon as the gel comes into contact with the teeth. The oxygen molecules break down the pigment molecules responsible for the discoloration and make them invisible. The treatment can be repeated according to the patient’s needs.

Home teeth whitening

Professional teeth whitening at home is more effective than DIY (do-it-yourself) methods. This method is carried out using a kit that includes a thermostamp or an individual transparent mask that is specially adapted to the structure of the mouth. The kit also contains a whitening carbamide peroxide gel and the density of the gel can vary according to the patient’s tooth sensitivity. For about two weeks, this mask is worn for a minimum of 2 hours and a maximum of 6 hours, twice a day. At the end of the treatment, the teeth look whiter and a more youthful smile is achieved.

Laser teeth whitening

Laser teeth whitening is one of the most modern and demanded techniques in dentistry today because it offers faster results than other techniques. The patient’s gums are carefully covered with a protective mask, a hydrogen peroxide-based gel is applied to the teeth and the gel is activated by the laser for 30 seconds. The whitening gel is reapplied 3 times during the procedure. The procedure is painless and quick and its duration usually ranges from 30 minutes to an hour. As it is a non-invasive treatment, it does not cause pain and has very limited side effects. It can therefore be applied to almost any type of tooth structure.
